PPWR packaging review: design the specification before you make the claim

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste is in force and applies from 12 August 2026. This page is a practical supplier-side checklist for brands, importers and product teams reviewing packaging structure, materials, components and evidence. It is not legal advice or a compliance certificate.

Colormix helps turn a packaging brief into a measurable specification: board, wrap, insert, window, closure, finishing, packed volume and sample approval.

A PPWR-oriented packaging review in four steps

Use this before a quote and again before bulk approval.

01

Start with the product and route

The right packaging depends on product weight, breakage risk, retail or e-commerce channel, shipping route and end-of-life context.

02

Separate the components

Board, paper wrap, window film, insert, magnet, ribbon, adhesive and protective outer should be recorded rather than described as one vague “paper package”.

03

Reduce before decorating

Review dimensions, headspace, layers and unnecessary components before adding finishes, windows or secondary packs.

04

Verify the final claim

Recyclability, recycled content, plastic-free and compostability claims require evidence for the exact final specification and market.

What to record on the specification

  • Product dimensions, packed weight and protection requirement
  • Primary pack, secondary pack and transport outer
  • Board grade, paper, coating, film, adhesive and insert material
  • Magnets, ribbons, windows, labels and mixed-material parts
  • Flat or assembled packed volume and shipping route
  • Evidence behind recycled-content or recyclability claims

How Colormix supports the review

  • Structural design and dieline before production
  • Material and finish options listed in the quote
  • Digital sample in 3–7 days
  • Production-line sample in 7–10 days
  • Specification reference retained for bulk approval
  • Supplier and packing information prepared for the buyer’s records

Questions to ask before approving a packaging claim

What exactly is the claim?

“Recyclable”, “plastic-free”, “recycled content” and “compostable” are not interchangeable.

What is the complete component list?

A paper box may still include a window, foam insert, magnet, ribbon, coating or adhesive.

Which market applies?

Confirm the destination market, importer role and applicable collection or labelling rules.

What evidence is available?

Keep material declarations, supplier records, test results and the approved sample together.

PPWR packaging questions

Does Colormix provide legal PPWR certification?

No. Colormix provides packaging specifications, material details, sample review and supplier documentation to support the buyer’s compliance process. The importer, brand owner or other responsible economic operator should confirm the final legal obligations for the destination market.

Can you help reduce unnecessary packaging?

Yes. We can compare structure, board, insert, window, finish and packed volume before sampling, then document the selected specification.

Can packaging be designed for recyclability?

Material choices can be reviewed for compatibility with the intended recycling stream. The claim must be checked against the final combination of board, coating, film, adhesive, magnet, insert and local rules.

What should we send for a PPWR-oriented packaging review?

Send product dimensions and weight, destination countries, current packaging, required protection, material preferences, artwork and any environmental claims you intend to make.
